Nordic Swan Ecolabel at all our hotels
All five GreenStar hotels are Nordic Swan Ecolabelled. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel is the official Nordic ecolabel, with criteria covering areas such as energy and water consumption, waste, chemicals and procurement. The ecolabel is awarded by an independent organisation, and compliance with its requirements is regularly checked.
Our emissions in numbers
Sweco calculates the greenhouse gas emissions of our hotels twice a year in accordance with the GHG Protocol. The calculation covers energy used in the properties, refrigerants, waste management and breakfast.

The calculation does not yet cover all procurement, such as laundry services and cleaning. Our aim is to expand the scope of the calculation.
Energy
All our hotels use 100% emissions-free electricity verified with Guarantees of Origin. Some of our hotels have solar power systems on the roof. The origin of district heating varies by city and is stated on each hotel’s individual page.
Climate action beyond our own operations
In addition, we finance certified climate projects through CO2 Eston. Each year, the amount we contribute to climate projects exceeds the greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations quantified through our emissions accounting. This is a voluntary additional measure and does not reduce the emissions from our own hotels, which is why we do not call our hotels carbon neutral. Reducing emissions from our own operations is always our first priority.
For more than ten years, we have also supported tree planting by schools through the Environment Online (ENO) network.

Our story
Although GreenStar is an independent concept and business idea, it is impossible to describe its birth without telling about the circumstances in which it was born.
Kristian Ikonen, CEO of GreenStar, is the son of Reijo Ikonen, a hotel and restaurant entrepreneur in Joensuu. Reijo Ikonen’s company began operations in the 1960s.
